Marriage in the Catholic Church

Must be between male and female. When both persons are baptised they confer on each other the Sacrament of Marriage. The commitment between parties is for life. Catholic marriage must take place in an approved place of worship. Permission is not given for hotels or other public places.

In this parish it essential that couples have participated in a pre-marriage preparation course.

Courses take place in May and November each year are listed in the weekly newsletter.

Persons intending to marry in this parish are requested to:

Give at least six months prior notice
Confirm date and time
Complete pre-marriage enquiry forms
Provide Certificates of Baptism and Freedom to marry in the Catholic Church
Attend a pre-marriage preparation course which takes place twice yearly on dates announced in the weekly newsletter.

The pre-marriage course will help the couple with:

Financial preparation and information about general costs
Health and Medical information
Liturgical information for the marriage ceremony, including hymns and music
Help in completing appropriate marriage documentation
General help about flowers, photographers, ushers.
Choosing witnesses.

The couple should arrange for an organist and cantor. In all cases the couple should consult with the parish director of music – Theresa McInally, who is available after the 12 noon Mass every Sunday.

It is good to remember that marriage is a very special and sacred event and the ceremony should reflect this.

Sacred rather than secular music is the norm.

Marriages can take place on any day except Sunday and days in Holy Week.

Photographers are welcome but should remain discreet at all times during the service.
